Most types of spiced mulled wine are made from red wine. Mulled wine has been enjoyed this way for thousands of years, especially during cold winter nights. Zinfandel or Merlot are good choices of red wine for a mulled wine recipe. Sometimes, of course, the mulled wine recipe will tell you exactly what type of wine you should use. Wine that's been matured in oak doesn't usually work out so well for mulled wine recipes, so stay clear of those. Also stay clear of those really cheap red wines for making your mulled wine, if it tasted bad out the bottle it will be totally revolting when it's heated up! You don't need to go over the top and get the most expensive, but make sure it's nice enough that you'd drink it normally at room temperature. It's said elsewhere on the site, but it's important so here it is again: Don’t use an aluminum pan to heat your mulled wine. Aluminum will react with the acids in the wine and destroy the taste. Make sure your pan or pot is made of heatproof glass, ceramic or stainless steel, or that it has a non-stick coating. |
