Glögg is a traditional Scandinavian mulled wine.

  • Two 750 ml bottles of medium red wine
  • Seven ounces of vodka or schnapps
  • Three ounces of cognac or brandy
  • Four and a half ounces (25 grams) of raisins and flaked almonds
  • Eight crushed cardamom pods
  • Four cloves
  • One cinnamon stick
  • A one inch (2.5cm) piece of ginger that has been crushed

Instructions

Pour one bottle of red wine into a saucepan. Add sugar, raisins and almonds. Stir until sugar is dissolved.

Put the cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and ginger in a muslin bag. Tie the bag and then place the bag in the wine.  Allow the spices to infuse into the wine for about two hours.

Heat the wine. Remove from heat just before it is about to boil. Cover for at least a half hour, allowing the spices to continue to infuse.

Remove the spice bag.

Pour the second bottle of wine, the vodka or schnapps, and the cognac or brandy into the saucepan with the wine that has already been heated.

Reheat the wine, once again removing it from the heat just before it begins to boil.

Serve in heatproof glass cups. Provide your guests with spoons that they can use to pick out the almonds and raisins.
