Glühwein with Ginger and Nutmeg

This version of the German mulled wine known as Glühwein uses ginger and nutmeg to enhance the taste.

  • Two 750 ml bottles of red wine
  • Two inches (5 cm) of peeled, chopped, fresh ginger
  • Half of a teaspoon of grated nutmeg
  • Eight cloves
  • Two oranges
  • Three tablespoons of brown sugar

Instructions

Insert four cloves into each orange, and then cut the oranges into fourths, so that there is one clove in each fourth.

Pour the red wine into a large saucepan.  Add the ginger, nutmeg and orange pieces.  Heat the mixture and allow it to simmer for eight to ten minutes.

Pour the heated mixture, including the orange pieces, into goblets or wine glasses.
