Glühwein is a traditional German mulled wine.

Ingredients

  • Four quarts of dry red wine - Merlot, zinfandel or burgundy are good to use
  • One pint of brandy
  • One cup of sugar - More can be added as desired.
  • Six sticks of cinnamon (optional)
  • 12 whole cloves
  • Eighth of a teaspoon of allspice
  • Eighth of a teaspoon of mace
  • One or two sliced oranges
  • One sliced lemon

Instructions

  1. Pour wine into a large pot, then place it over a low heat.
  2. Once the wine starts to warm up, add the spices and the sugar. Stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Pour in the brandy.
  4. Continue to heat the mixture, making sure that it does not boil.
  5. Add the lemon and one orange.
  6. Steep over low heat for about an hour. You may add more sugar now, if it is not already sweet enough for your taste.
  7. The wine is ready to be served hot. Garnish each glass with an orange slice or a cinnamon stick.
