Glühwein is a traditional German mulled wine.
Ingredients
- Four quarts of dry red wine - Merlot, zinfandel or burgundy are good to use
- One pint of brandy
- One cup of sugar - More can be added as desired.
- Six sticks of cinnamon (optional)
- 12 whole cloves
- Eighth of a teaspoon of allspice
- Eighth of a teaspoon of mace
- One or two sliced oranges
- One sliced lemon
Instructions
- Pour wine into a large pot, then place it over a low heat.
- Once the wine starts to warm up, add the spices and the sugar. Stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves completely.
- Pour in the brandy.
- Continue to heat the mixture, making sure that it does not boil.
- Add the lemon and one orange.
- Steep over low heat for about an hour. You may add more sugar now, if it is not already sweet enough for your taste.
- The wine is ready to be served hot. Garnish each glass with an orange slice or a cinnamon stick.
