Mulled Wine Cocktail

The addition of gin to this mulled wine gives it an air of sophistication.

  • One bottle of red wine
  • Two ounces (60 grams) of demerara sugar - more sugar can be added if necesary.
  • One cinnamon stick
  • Nutmeg (grated) - to taste
  • One halved orange
  • One bay leaf (dried)
  • Sloe gin or damson gin (this is optional)

Method

  1. Place all of the ingredients in a pan.
  2. Heat the mixture gently. Once all of the sugar has dissolved, taste the mixture. If you would like your wine to be sweeter,  you may put more sugar in now.
  3. Once all of the sugar has dissolved, remove the pan from the heat. You can stir the gin in now, if you want to add it.
  4. Strain the mixture, then serve it immediately in glasses that can safely hold hot beverages.
