Most types of spiced mulled wine are made from red wine. Mulled wine has been enjoyed this way for thousands of years, especially during cold winter nights. A nice red wine to use for mulled wine is Zinfandel or Merlot, unless the mulled wine recipe specifies the exact type of wine for you. Wine that's been matured in oak doesn't usually work out so well for mulled wine recipes, so stay clear of those. Also stay clear of those really cheap red wines for making your mulled wine, if it tasted bad out the bottle it will be totally revolting when it's heated up! You don't need to go over the top and get the most expensive, but make sure it's nice enough that you'd drink it normally at room temperature. It's said elsewhere on the site, but it's important so here it is again: always be sure to use a stainless steel, ceramic, heatproof glass or nonstick coated /pot to heat your mulled wine as other materials, such as aluminum, will react with the wine and make it taste bad. |
